Yes, it made possible through the 2023 Davao del Norte Interscholastic Press Freedom Competition took place on October 26-27, 2023 at DavNor Gym and some other venues within the capitol premises.

The Provincial Information, Communication, and Knowledge Management Office (PICKMO) designed a category intended for teachers to rekindle in them their passion and prowess in journalism. Witnessing the battle between coaches who had been active participants throughout elementary, high school, and college days, as well as some who were joining for the first time, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Furthermore, it aimed to sharpen the honing abilities of the teachers for the student-journalists by cascading the insights and inputs gained from the event, especially in delivering relevant news and information.

A total of 26 schools from Davao del Norte participated in the competition, and among them was Maryknoll College of Panabo, Inc. Three teachers from Integrated Basic Educationβ€”Ma’am Mae Joy Quijada, Sir Ryan Verallo, and Ma’am Darla Wanayβ€”dabbled in feature writing, extemporaneous speaking, and female TV newscasting.

For radio broadcasting, the administrative officers took on the challenge. Sir Felix Delfuso assumed the role of technical director, while Sir Geilbeshter Diagbel became the main anchor. Ma’am Charis Juanico contributed as an infomercial actor, and Ma’am Maria Suzette Albarico played as talent 1 and script writer. Additionally, SHS faculty members, Sir NiΓ±o Japano joined as a news presenter and Sir Ronielo Magpusao also contended for news writing event. Not to be overlooked, representing male TV newscasting was the dynamic and knowledgeable coach, Sir Julius Gomez, who played a pivotal role in shaping the potentials of both TV newscasting and radio broadcasting in MCPI.

The 2-day Press Freedom Competition came to a close with the announcement of the top three winners in each event. As foreseen from his flawless performance, Sir Julius Gomez emerged as the Champion in the male TV newscasting category, and the Radio Broadcasting team secured a respectable 3rd place for their overall production.

It’s worth noting that all the teacher participants from MCPI put forth their utmost effort and represented the school with tremendous pride and honor. This marks just the beginning of the serious preparations for the upcoming competitions.

Congratulations, teachers! Your incredible talents shine brightly in all your endevours.
