The Jubilee is a special year of forgiveness, renewal, and spiritual grace observed by the Catholic Church. Its origins are rooted in the Old Testament, particularly in Leviticus 25, where God commanded the Israelites to observe a “jubilee year” every 50 years. This year was marked by rest for the land, liberation of slaves, and restoration of ancestral property, symbolizing mercy, justice, and restoration.

The Jubilee Year is grounded in the biblical concept of restoration and renewal, as written in Leviticus 25:10: “𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘧𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘮 𝘭𝘪𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘴. In the Catholic tradition, the Jubilee was instituted in 1300 by Pope Boniface VIII. It is celebrated approximately every 25 years or on special occasions to offer the faithful a chance for spiritual renewal, pilgrimage, and reconciliation with God and others. The Jubilee includes the granting of indulgences and highlights themes of mercy, forgiveness, and unity.

The year 2025 is a Jubilee Year, with the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” and it continues this tradition, inviting Catholics worldwide to reflect on their faith journey, seek spiritual growth, and embrace a renewed commitment to living the Gospel values. It is a time of prayer, celebration, and a call to action for greater compassion and justice in the world.
